New festival for Sark’s tourist calendar

Local residents are organising a new festival for Sark’s tourist calendar, La Beltane, to be held on Saturday 29th April 2023 at La Seigneurie. Co-ordinator Jolie Booth has said of the event:

‘… we’re looking to create an annual event that grows over time into an island-wide celebration that appears to be something we’ve done for 500 years. The school children have been learning maypole dancing and Morris dancing, have also learnt a traditional mummers play, and we’ll be having some ceilidh dancing too and in the evening three bands. The day will also include a May Fayre with a crowning of May Queens and a host of traditional arts and crafts stalls and workshops.’

Organisers have launched a Crowdfunder to help raise funds towards covering the initial costs. The event will raise money for the Professor Saint Fund and will hopefully a surplus will ensure a contribution to next year’s event to ensure sustainability.
