OPERATION BASALT COMMEMORATION

Monday 3rd October 2022 marked 80 years since Operation Basalt took place; this raid saw British soldiers landing in Sark to gather intelligence about the Germans who were occupying the Island during World War II. The unveiling of new plaques on the memorial stone at Hog’s Back took place with one listing all the commandos names who took part in the raid and one listing the names of the three German soldiers who lost their lives during the raid as well as the live soldier that was captured. The plaques were unveiled at 11.30am before a rededication of the Cassino Oak took place a little before 1.00pm and followed with a presentation and buffet at Stocks Hotel.
